Autism and young onset dementia
The webinar explored the experiences of autistic people when accessing dementia healthcare, and highlighted some of the barriers they may encounter and the importance of making services more accessible and inclusive.
It outlined the work being undertaken at Dementia UK to develop clear, accessible information and resources for both the autistic community and healthcare professionals, with the aim of improving understanding, communication and support.
It also examined the complex relationship between autism and young onset dementia. In particular, it considered how certain characteristics commonly associated with autism, such as differences in communication, behaviour and sensory processing, may sometimes be misunderstood or misattributed as signs of young onset dementia. We discussed how these overlaps can contribute to confusion in assessment and diagnosis, and why greater awareness among healthcare professionals is essential.
Presenters at the webinar were Dr Ryan Gray, Research Assistant at Dementia UK, who leads on the young onset dementia strand of its 2023-2026 strategy and Dr Gavin Stewart PhD, a senior postdoctoral research fellow at King’s College London. Gavin is an expert in autism and ageing and his research takes a multifaceted approach to explore the life experiences of autistic people across adulthood and as they age.
Lou shared her lived experience as an autistic carer for her mum with dementia, her difficulties in navigating services and her mum’s transition into a care home.
